How to Decorate Your Storefront, Restaurant or Boutique for the Holidays (The Simple Stencil Way)

How to Decorate Your Storefront Restaurant or Boutique

Your front window is the hardest-working salesperson you have. It's on the clock 24 hours a day, it greets every person who walks or drives by, and during the holidays it's the first clue that your business is the place to be this season.

But hiring a window painter is expensive, booking one in November is nearly impossible, and plastic garland and clings never quite look professional. That's where vinyl decals come in. With a few well-chosen designs and a squeegee, you can give your storefront a polished, hand-lettered look in an afternoon — and switch it from fall to Christmas without starting over.

Here's how shop owners, restaurants, boutiques and churches are doing it.

Short on time? We've gathered our most window-friendly designs, from bold greetings to borders and accents, in one place: Holiday Window & Storefront Decals.

Why vinyl decals work so well for business windows

  • They look professional. Crisp lettering and clean lines read like custom signage, not a craft project.
  • They're fast. One person can dress a full window during a slow afternoon or before opening.
  • They're affordable. A full holiday window costs a fraction of a painter or custom sign shop.
  • They come down cleanly. When the season ends, peel them off — no scraping paint off the glass in January.
  • They work at every scale. Pick large sizes for big plate-glass windows and small accents for doors, host stands and register areas.

Plan your window like a display, not a sticker

Before you order, step across the street (or into the parking lot) and look at your window the way customers do.

  1. Pick one hero piece per window. A large greeting or seasonal phrase centered at eye level is what people read first. Go big — a 36" or 48" wide design reads from the sidewalk and from a passing car.
  2. Add a border or flourish. A vine or flourish along the top or bottom edge frames the glass and makes the whole window feel finished.
  3. Repeat accents for rhythm. Small motifs — bells, snowflakes, stars — scattered in groups of three or five tie multiple windows together.
  4. Keep it consistent across windows. If you have several panes, repeat the same border on each and vary the hero piece. Matching sizes make a row of windows look designed rather than random.
  5. Leave room to see in. Customers want to see your space, your food and your merchandise. Because our decals have no background, customers can see through the negative space in the design however consider the design and how you want it to be displayed around your merchandise or other seasonal decor.

Not sure what size to order? Our size guide walks through measuring.

Start with fall, finish with Christmas

The smartest holiday windows are built in layers. Put up a border now, and you only swap the centerpiece as the season changes.

November: harvest and gratitude. A Pumpkin Vine Flourish across the top or bottom of each window instantly says "fall" — at 48" wide, one runs the length of a standard storefront pane. Pair it with a large Happy Thanksgiving greeting in the center. Browse more in our Thanksgiving collection, or pull a line from 20 Gratitude Quotes for Thanksgiving Decor.

December: the main event. After Thanksgiving, swap the centerpiece for a Merry Christmas greeting or a message like Peace on Earth with Dove. Scatter small accents such as Twin Bells around doors and corners. See everything in our Christmas and Holiday collections.

January: start the new year fresh. Peel off the holiday pieces and put up a welcome message or your business hours so the window keeps working all year.

Ideas by type of business

Restaurants and cafés

Frame the front windows with a seasonal border, then put a big greeting on the door or the window closest to your host stand. Add a small decal near the register or on a chalkboard wall for guests who are already inside. If you're open for holiday parties or catering, a window is a free billboard — add your hours or "Now booking holiday parties" in custom lettering.

Boutiques and retail shops

Treat each window like a magazine page: one bold greeting, a border, and plenty of open glass so your displayed merchandise is the star. Use the same accent across every pane to tie the storefront together, and repeat it on the fitting-room mirror or checkout counter.

Salons, offices and service businesses

Your entry door is your window display. A medium greeting at eye level and a few small accents make the lobby feel festive without crowding the space. Our Reception, Welcome Center & Lobby collection has year-round pieces to rotate in after the holidays.

Churches and ministries

Churches are some of our favorite holiday decorators. Scripture and Nativity-themed designs on entry doors, fellowship hall windows and welcome areas set the tone for Advent and Christmas services. Explore our Church Entrance & Atrium collection and the complete church collection.

Tips for applying decals on glass

  • Clean the glass first. Use glass cleaner, then wipe with a lint-free cloth and rubbing alcohol so there's no dust, cleanser residue or streaks.
  • Measure and mark. Use painter's tape to mark the center and top line before you peel anything. Measure from the frame, not by eye.
  • Use a real squeegee. A Professional Squeegee Tool presses the vinyl firmly to the glass and pushes out air bubbles — it's the difference between "homemade" and "professional." Our orders include a free professional squeegee tool with every order.
  • Work in comfortable temperatures. Vinyl bonds best when the glass isn't freezing cold or baking in direct sun, so plan to apply on a mild day or from the inside of the window.
  • Inside or outside the glass? Applying on the inside protects your decal from weather and scrapers. If it needs to read correctly from the street, choose the reverse cut (mirror image) option when you order. If the reverse cut option is not available on the product, simply email us with your order number after placing order and we will reverse cut your decals at no extra charge.  White or light colors are the easiest to read on glass.
  • Practice first. Every order includes a free practice decal — use it on a back-office door, or similar surface, to get the feel before tackling the front window.

Ordering for several windows or locations?

If you're decorating a whole storefront, multiple locations or a large building, plan your list by window and order everything at once so colors and sizes match. Need a custom phrase, your business name or a size that's not listed? Our custom vinyl lettering service can make it. And if you have questions about sizing a big project, email us at support@thesimplestencil.com — we're happy to help you plan.

Order early. The weeks between Thanksgiving and Christmas are our busiest of the year. Get your windows up before Black Friday and Small Business Saturday, when foot traffic peaks.
